Madeleine Joy

Utilizing a system whereby the ruled grid becomes the vessel for a lexicon of hand drawn symbols, Madeleine Joy Dawes’ works on paper engage with reclaiming the intimacy of the human hand in making, through pattern making commonly associated with cross stitch.

Underpinned by the language, tactility and intricate nature of textile-based crafts, works that initially masquerade as digital prints are subverted from by subtle nuances and imperfections in mark making. Methodically building each drawing pixel by pixel, Dawes creates a literal atomisation of imagery or ideas that she is working with, to be meticulously reconfigured into new forms that speak to the connections between traditional techniques, repetition, geometry and pattern.
