Lily Alice Baker is a 23-year-old emerging artist based in South East London. Having graduated from Goldsmiths University in 2021, her abstract work is based on an intuitive, gestural style anchored in the human figure, and penetrating the existing ‘boys-only club’ that is the Abstract Expressionist movement. She works with a richly textured and dynamic paint application, and a  luxurious palette of deep blues, greens, purples and yellows. At the very beginning of her career, the artist has already begun to garner attention, featuring in publications such as Vogue.

Her work explores the subordination of the female form as an object, indulging in the romanticism of euphoric feeling, whilst exposing the seediness of what goes on in the shadows. Rooted in spontaneous gesture and abstract figuration, Baker’s visceral application of oil paint acts as commentary on the discourse around the body.
